A student’s guide to Birmingham for every budget

Posted in by romylevin on July 1, 2021

Birmingham is the UK’s second largest student city and known for its numerous higher education institutions and vibrant student lifestyle. So whether you’re in need of a study day, a cultural day out or a big night out, Birmingham has so many great options for food and entertainment for every budget.

Gosta Green

An institution, Gosta Green is the go-to student pub for beers, burgers, quizzes and any sporting event you want to watch on the big screen. With pool tables a-plenty and an awesome beer garden, this is a great, super affordable spot just next to Aston Uni – day or night.

Birmingham Museum & Gallery

A landmark building in the city centre, entry is free to the main exhibits. Get lost in rooms filled with paintings and objects from all over the world, spanning seven centuries.

Star City

A classic entertainment destination with restaurants, cinema, bowling, laser tag, escape room, mini golf and more – all down the road from Aston Uni.

Digbeth Dining Club

The award-winning dining experience makes for a great evening out. With music, entertainment and a huge range of the UK’s best street food vendors – there’s always something new to try. The Dining Club will be moving to Longbridge (South Birmingham and an event bigger event space, so keep your eyes peeled on their social feeds for updates!

Go for a curry

The original home of the Balti curry, Birmingham’s “Balti Triangle” was once home to over 40 curry houses. These days there are only a handful left in the triangle, but the city is full of incredible Indian restaurants from cheap as chips authentic family-run places to pricier contemporary and inventive establishments.

Glee Club

A firm favourite, the Glee Club has cosy living room vibes, great food and an awesome rotation of stand-up comedians! With special student pricing on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and discount vouchers for food and drink, this is a cracking, budget-friendly night out.

Birmingham Rag Markets

Famous for its sheer size – there are over 350 stalls – whether it’s meat, fruit, kitchen nick nacks, fabrics or fancy dress, there is nothing you can’t find at the Rag Markets. Top tip: go after 4pm and you can eat for weeks with just a fiver!

Custard Factory

A creative hub in the heart of Digbeth, home to start-ups, independent shops, eateries, bars and the Mockingbird Cinema & Kitchen. You’ve even got Ghetto Golf – crazy golf with street food, cocktails and DJs.

The Gay Village

A lively, vibrant area filled with coffee shops, pubs and bars that comes alive at night with drag shows, club nights and cabaret shows. Next door to the Chinese Quarter, you’ll never be short of midnight snack after one of the best nights out in the city.

Bongos Bingo

The infamous bingo show has made its way to Birmingham! A “riotous” night out, prepare for an insane mix of old-school bingo, iconic prizes, live shows, dance-offs and singalongs. And get ready to come home covered in bingo stamps…

Temple Street & Bennetts Hill

You’ll find great food and cocktails the whole way down Temple Street, with everything from Revolucion de Cuba and Las Iguanas to the The Botanist and the famous San Carlo. Pop round the corner and you’ll end up by Bodega, The Indian Streatery and Lost & Found.

The Jewellery Quarter

With over 100 independent retailers, eateries, cafes and bars, the Jewellery Quarter is a buzzing, historic part of the city. We’re fans of The Rose Villa Tavern, a must-visit whether you’re looking for quiz nights, great cocktails or live comedy.

Christmas Market

Birmingham is also famous for its huge Christmas markets – the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany! You’ll find a huge range of traditional gifts and food and it’s the perfect place to do some Christmas shopping or while away a wintery afternoon with a boozy hot choc or stein of beer.

The Mailbox

An iconic lifestyle destination, The Mailbox is filled with designer stores, beauty rooms and world-class hotels. Doesn’t sound particularly student-friendly, but walk through to the canal and find plenty of bars and restaurants – including your high-street favourites.
